Since the 80’s I have enjoyed writing yet it wasn’t until 1988 that I wrote my 1st story for fun & created a few stories with structure and morals that were based on my favorite cartoon character since I was 2 (Betty Boop). I wasn’t fantastic at drawing and to be honest her head shape looked like Stewie from Family Guy and no, I won’t share those stories nor the drawings so don’t ask.
In the early 1990’s I would write poems and send them in letters to a boyfriend I had that lived almost 3.5k miles away. This probably helped encourage me to keep writing since I was so far away and calling long distance was very pricey in the days of not having well-structured long distance plans attached to phones that were plugged in to a wall at your home unlike now-a-days where the main features are cell phones so who needs voicemail answering machines.
In the mid-1990’s I started to write & keep them for myself in a 3-ringed binder to keep safe and as perfect condition as I possibly could. In 1996 I dated a guy who also loved to write whenever he was inspired and on anything he could find. Didn’t matter to him if he kept it or not, he just got it all out whenever things hit him. He taught me to do the same which inspired me so much to have mini notebooks, post-its and all kinds of notebooks with me in a backpack at all times. I kept tons of pens with me from a certain hotel my mom worked at and got addicted on taking Bic pens from hotels when I stayed at them so I would never run out of ink during inspirational moments.
Fast forward to 2004 when I was a single mom and was inspired by a dream to write a full story so elaborate that in 2006 became a script that I was proud of and an indie film in 2007. I got screwed over and although it hurt knowing what the cast & crew put into it, along with friends backing it up, and along with the soundtrack from lots of bands that were all supporting it. I started to look through moving boxes to unpack into a house I was renting and I started to come across all the pages, post-its, small torn pieces of paper, and all my notebooks to re-read my past inner thoughts. Had a stack so high I wanted to type them all into my crappy computer and print them all to put into 1 binder and see how much it really came to be. Everything I found was from 1995 - 2007. After 1.5 weeks of non-stop writing and putting circles with slashes through original notebooks (to make sure I knew it was typed into the computer) all while my lil’ baby girl was sleeping. I was shocked at the end results after endless amounts of ink jet cartridges and the three-ring hole-punch making my hands a bright red but I don’t give up on things when I put goals into place.
For a brief moment I looked at it and thought to myself, “That’d be a great book!” I looked at the time and noticed it was 2:30am and decided to sleep on it.
